World Cultures Essay- Interviews

World Cultures Essay- Interviews

When one sees Judaism. Or almost any religion for that matter, it gives the impression of a very pointed path to follow, the system is laid out in front of you. But when you take a much closer look, these trails have infinite branches and the seemingly narrow path suddenly becomes convoluted and mystifying. To see a Jew and think that he simply is Jewish, and therefore conforms to the exact scriptures written in the past is an immense miscalculation. This erroneous method of thinking does not encompass the full veracity of Judaism, and any faith in that case. Judaism has an amazingly diverse assembly of followers, and the faith and even the concept of god varies from believer to believer. In these interviews, we tried to glimpse into the ever-shifting heart of the faith. Although the two interviewers were exceptionally unique from one another when it came to their personal experiences, they share the traditional Jewish morals, especially those of nonviolence.

Rae Draezel is the president of Athenian Jew Crew, and she has been a Jew all her life. She goes to Midrasha, a Jewish Teen Hebrew school. She follows most conventional principles of Judaism, but doesn’t keep kosher. She believes in the traditional Jewish ideal, the concept of the messiah coming, but has some speculation about it, “I’m not sure if I necessarily believe in a lot of stuff that Judaism preaches, but it is a big part of it that like the Messiah is coming.” She is uncertain about creation, and wants to look into it more. When Alex asked “Do you have any particular thoughts on why the earth and humans were created and the meaning of life?, Rae replied with, “Not really… I’m not sure I know the meaning of life right now but if I do find out I will get back to you”

Rabbi Bruce is a rabbi and an astrophysicist. He has an amazing and unique take on the Jewish faith that encompasses Christian and Scientologistic principles. He believes that the messiah, Jesus, has already come. He also has an extensive knowledge on the many paths that Judaism is following, as he states in the following quote; “ Now that being given, most Jewish people would classify themselves not so much on the basis of belief as practice. If there’re Jews that are atheists, Jews that are Buddhists, they would classify themselves according to the practice they follow.”

Rabbi Bruce and Rae share many characteristics. They are both strongly opposed to violence of almost any form, Rabbi Bruce and Rae meet a consensus at this question, Rabbi Bruce says, “It is never just to harm another person because you want to.” Rae agrees, saying, “I am an anti-violence kind of person. I don’t know; I don’t yeah. I don’t think violence is ever the answer.” Another similarity is that they both are very tolerant of other religions. Rabbi Bruce is tolerant, and even says that they have a lot of truth in them, as well. So I think there’s certainly truth in a lot of other religions, but a lot of the time that truth is incomplete or at some point goes off in the wrong direction.” Rae thinks that other religions are great, but hasn’t has enough time to personally admire them.

There are many differences between the two in terms of their personal experiences as Jews. Rabbi Bruce has had to deal with anti-Semitism, but never to a violent extent. Rae has never directly encountered anti-Semitism, but has heard some offensive comments, “I guess people have said jokes to me that I don’t really think are appropriate just saying like “ ‘Oh God, your such a Jew’ ”. Also, Rae was born Jewish, while Bruce had a different experience: “Well, it’s interesting because as I was growing up, in the suburbs, religion was never mentioned, identity was never mentioned, and we had basically no idea what it was about, and didn’t really care. Having looked back through my family lines, there is evidence that my family was Jewish, but we don’t have any documentation.”

In conclusion, the textual evidence shows that my thesis accurately represents the two interviewees in terms of their similarities and differences. The word Israel literally means “one who wrestles with god”, and personally, I find that this means that to truly be a Jew, you must “wrestle’ with the ideas perented to you in the Torah and in modern life, and form your own personal interpretation of it. These two interviewees are examples of one religion, but with completely different views on some matters, while the religion itself forms a base for morals, like anti- violence. I believe that these differences in these people are based on their unique past experiences, so in a way what makes them different also makes them alike. These people can challenge their faith and instead of losing it, gain more than they ever could expect.

Lit Essay-

When you read the mystical tale Coyote, by Juan Villoro, you would never notice it’s subtle similarities to the writings of Garcia Marquez. The best way to explore the differences and similarities of these two great author’s literary styles and themes is by showing them side by side. The story by Juan Villoro, Coyote, is about a mystical passage of a man who has consumed Peyote buttons and separated from his company. His trek through the desert teaches him a lesson about who he is. The other story, Balthazar’s Marvelous Afternoon, tells the tale of a man who makes a beautiful birdcage, and the interactions between the people of the town and Balthazar. Balthazar’s Marvelous Afternoon and Coyote share the thematic storytelling concept of one object representing another.
In Coyote, the author uses juxtaposition to show the similarities in nature, and this reoccurring theme is what shows the author’s dexterity and command of story telling elements. The theme of juxtaposition has the largest influence on the coyote he faces on his quest and the cactus he tears open for sustenance. “he slid the knife in forcefully, and slit open the three-legged animal” is nearly identical to when he slits open the plant to eat. Another reference to the coyote was when he cut open the coyote and “felt an indescribable relief when he plunged his hands into that soft, wet substance” is almost identical text to when he cut open the aloe vera plant and puts the insides on his wounds.

In Balthazar’s Marvelous Afternoon, the author shows that he has equal talent and knowledge of story elements. However, he uses different literary styles such as describing characters with similar traits or qualities, as shown in the following quote in which two characters with similar qualities are described differently to show their personality. He describes the good doctor as “smoothly and delicately fat, like a woman who had been beautiful in her youth”, and then describes Jose Montiel as “obese and hairy” The author also has the birdcage represent the confinements of poverty, and Pepe’s relationship with his controlling family. It also helps the author show how this novel shows the interactions between different socio-economic classes.
The thematic storytelling concept shared by both authors is the idea of one object representing another, and as actions are preformed on one object, the linked object faces similar actions. The tone in either story is very different, but both follow a man traveling and interacting with the environment. In Coyote, the tone and subject matter are dark, but have an unreal, ethereal feel to them, with deja vu. In Balthazar’s Marvelous Afternoon, the tone is very to the point, and tells the story from the stance of a narrator who tells the story as it visually appears and uses the subtle variations in description of a common trait.
Even though they use these different forms of representing characters, they still share the basic concept of representation, and the plots follow a typical path. But the differences still outweigh the similarities, and the bottom line is that these two works are unique and have a great grasp of literary terms. At times the use of themes and representation even manage dwarf the plot, and give a real sense of not knowing exactly what is really going on, but still liking it all the way.

KANYE is my new hero

West and Mike Myers had been paired up to appear about halfway through the hurrican releif effort. Their assignment: Take turns reading a script describing the breach in the levees around New Orleans.

Myers: The landscape of the city has changed dramatically, tragically and perhaps irreversibly. There is now over 25 feet of water where there was once city streets and thriving neighborhoods.

(Myers throws to West, who looked extremely nervous in his super-preppy designer rugby shirt and white pants, which is not like the arrogant West and which, in retrospect, should have been a tip-off.)

West: I hate the way they portray us in the media. You see a black family, it says, "They're looting." You see a white family, it says, "They're looking for food." And, you know, it's been five days [waiting for federal help] because most of the people are black. And even for me to complain about it, I would be a hypocrite because I've tried to turn away from the TV because it's too hard to watch. I've even been shopping before even giving a donation, so now I'm calling my business manager right now to see what is the biggest amount I can give, and just to imagine if I was down there, and those are my people down there. So anybody out there that wants to do anything that we can help -- with the way America is set up to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off, as slow as possible. I mean, the Red Cross is doing everything they can. We already realize a lot of people that could help are at war right now, fighting another way -- and they've given them permission to go down and shoot us!

(West throws back to Myers, who is looking like a guy who stopped on the tarmac to tie his shoe and got hit in the back with the 8:30 to La Guardia.)

Myers: And subtle, but in many ways even more profoundly devastating, is the lasting damage to the survivors' will to rebuild and remain in the area. The destruction of the spirit of the people of southern Louisiana and Mississippi may end up being the most tragic loss of all.

(And, because Myers is apparently as dumb as his Alfalfa hair, he throws it back to West.)

West: George Bush doesn't care about black people!

(Back to Myers, now looking like the 8:30 to La Guardia turned around and caught him square between the eyes.)

Myers: Please call . . .

At which point someone at NBC News finally regained control of the joystick and cut over to Chris Tucker, who started right in with more scripted blah, blah, blah

school update

so... at schhol today I learned about "bus politics" the seniors sit furhter back, and the lower your grade the closer to the door. i sit at the very end, fuck seniors. So then I threw a bean at a senior who was giving me dirty looks at lunch.
-----------
Then i lookk at my pants...
OH SHIT!
wore the wrong pants.. these are so short they look like fucking Capris. I quickly whip out some scissors and turn them into ghetto shorts. Me and Ian then put the pant legs on our heads and start yelling in class at eachother.
-----------
I feel like i'm not really myself...
these kids don't know about certian qualities i hide due to my fear of discrimination...
and I feel like half a person sometimes. They don't know about some bad shit i've done.
-----------
to them im the kinda clumsy kid who don't give a shit about seniors and who chooses to chill with the unpoular kids, the kid who chugged the soy sauce at lunch and made his own fucking shorts... who dosen't give a fuck about what they think because his real friends who would actually care for me If I was sick are all going to berkely high.

My blog has just hit 1000 hits... that means people have looked at this page 1007 times as I speak.
In celebration, I have put together this joyus song:
(to the tune of deck the halls)
chorus: fuck you im not singing

im not going to sing
fuck that
(chorus)
Bush eats babies
im still not singing
(chorus)

the next billboard hit... number one!
yeeeeeah

School is officially started... so much chaos

Well, the school year has begun, and I am already praying for the weekend... only 2 days!
----------------
reasons weekends rock-
-i havent really had one in 2 weeks, so busy!
-Im looking forward to a date this weekend with Ivy
-3 days of pure mayhem, and the Toys to Kings Bomb! (Im me at robfanmail for more info)
-----------------
Kids at school that I chillax with...
-Dylan-This funny dude who has my kind of chillaxed, baby-gobblin' style of comedy. We complement eachother.
-Alex Buck-I know... he sounds like buxbaum but He's a completely different, cool individual
-Alex (girl)-this cool tomboyish girl who i hang with on occasion. She is friends w/ ian and is pissed at Frodo, cuz of his online cartoon where he grabbed a characters boobs, and we all knew that the character was a cyber-version of alex.
-Jen-this girly-girl who i hang out with... but she's way too into being popular...
-Ben-this child genious, at age 13, going into calculus... He's not nerdy though, just a smart, funny dude.
-ian-a superhyperactive version of me. He is into getting a hoodie of one color (like my blue one) and wearing that jacket all year round, rain or shine. Friends with Frodo.
-Frodo-This curly haired kid who is friends w/ Ian
Thats all for now
--------------------

and on a more serious note,
There are some people that I know who are going though a rough time, wether it be love, alcoholism, or a recent death...
I wish them the best of luck in these hard times, because when people are all around me being sad, It depresses me to know thhat these people are going through some of the hardest times in their lives, and I can only seem to watch from the sidelines, and either dare try to help or simply sit in the stands... so I hope that you guys are alright...I will help you guys (and you know who you are) that are questioning where your life will take you.... So peace and love for all, because thats what really matters in this world...
-Robby the ruiner of until now un-serious blogs...
Now to cheer yall up... SKEET SKEET SKEEEEEEEEET!

Due to popular demand...

Evrybody who has seen my blog has asked me why I haven't written about Ivy yet.
IT'S CUZ WERE NOT OFFICIALLY GOING OUT!
but for all my devoted fans *cough* I will tell you. So Ivy is this really cool, hot chick who I used to date but then i split up with and Im not sure why now...
But anyways, I asked my informant mariah i f she would go out with me, because I have liked her for the wole summer. now it seems that a date is in the cards... Awesome : )
-------------------
on a darker note, There was a nasty rumor running around that Ivy was going out w/ me to make mariah and sebastian not be all alone on dates... I wont secify where the rumor came from, cuz Im not sure. but it's not true and in the past

well, today I am typing from my school computer... it sucks. I hope that I don't have to use these decaying piles of crap for4 years (they're dells)
